Maryland State Police reported that the 2001 white Chevy pickup truck involved in the accident was driven by Mervin Louis Martin of Pittsville. Evidence and witness statements indicate that the Chevy pickup was moving east bound when it went too far to the left side, struck a ditch, came back onto the road and then struck the commercial tractor trailer that was making a left turn from Route 589 onto US 50.
The westbound lanes of US 50 were closed for several hours while authorities investigated the scene of the collision, including the Maryland State Highway Administration, Worcester County Sheriffs office and the Berlin fire and police departments.
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the commercial truck driver, Russell K. Morrisson of Fayetteville, PA, was not injured. Police are still not sure of the cause of the accident.
