Subaru Says: Stop Driving Recently Recalled Vehicles!

By Alpert Schreyer on May 19, 2016

SubaruLast Friday, CNN reported Subaru is trying to get this message out: if you have a recalled vehicle, stop driving it now!

The Subaru auto recall includes the Legacy and Outback from model years 2016 and 2017.   These cars are at risk of steering failure, according to the company.  The recall, which began on Friday, May 6, includes cars built after February 29, 2016.  53,000 cars are being recalled, and about 30,000 of them remain unsold.

What to do if you have a recalled Subaru

According to CNN, the issue isn’t with the power steering system, but with the steering column itself.  If you have one of the recalled models, Subaru says to take it to your Subaru dealer to get it fixed.  They will send a technician to inspect the vehicle or tow it to the dealership at no cost to you.

Subaru says:

On its service website, the automaker says the potential defect in the steering column resulted from technicians using the wrong tool setting during the manufacturing process, which may have resulted in “improper machining of one of the steering column shafts.”

The defect can cause the steering column to fail to turn the wheels, increasing the risk of crash, according to Subaru’s service site.

Whether or not your car has a defective steering column, towing and inspection will come at no monetary cost to you, says Subaru. If your car has the defect, the steering column can be replaced at any official Subaru dealership.

This recall, though thankfully an early and comparatively small one, will doubtless cost the company, and Subaru’s urgency at getting out the message shows the gravity of the situation.  If the defect causes accidents that result in injury or death, the company could face major legal problems.

Accidents happen, but some can be prevented.  When a company distributes a product that turns out to be defective, putting the public in danger, it could constitute negligence.   If you or someone you love has been injured in an accident that was the result of a defective product or someone’s negligence, call the experienced personal injury attorneys at Alpert Schreyer, LLC for your free case evaluation.
