Toyota Recalls 7.5 Million Vehicles Worldwide for Window Switch Fires

By Alpert Schreyer on October 12, 2012

Toyota Motor Corporation has issued a recall for 2.5 million vehicles in the United States and a total of 7.5 million worldwide due to a defective power window switch. These defective switches put occupants at risk for a vehicle fire and have already led to hundreds of reported fires and nine car accident injuries.

As detailed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect is caused by improper lubrication of the power window master switch assemblies. Because of this, the switch assemblies could overheat and malfunction, which can lead to melting and even fires. In order to solve the problem, Toyota dealers will be notifying owners and applying a special grease meant to prevent heat buildup and will replace any switches damaged by the problem, all without charge.

The recall comes after a four-month long NHTSA investigation into the defect, with incidents possibly dating back to 2010, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Of the 2.5 million Toyota vehicles affected in the U.S., the recalled vehicles are:

  • 2009 Pontiac Vibe
  • 2007-2009 Toyota Camry
  • 2007-2009 Toyota Camry HV
  • 2009 Toyota Corolla
  • 2009 Toyota Corolla Matrix
  • 2008 Toyota Highlander
  • 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
  • 2007-2009 Toyota RAV4
  • 2008-2009 Toyota Scion XB
  • 2008-2009 Toyota Scion XD
  • 2008-2009 Toyota Sequoia
  • 2007-2008 Toyota Tundra
  • 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris
