A 19-year-old pregnant woman was seriously injured in a Baltimore car accident when the car in which she was traveling was struck by a vehicle. According to a WBAL TV news report, the car crash occurred at Kresson Street and Pulaski Highway in Baltimore. Officials say a driver turned left and struck a vehicle containing the pregnant woman. She and her baby are in critical condition and the driver of the car sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured and could face charges.
It is unclear if the expectant mother or her baby will survive the crash. This type of accident is tragically common in Maryland. Traffic accidents are the number one killer in Maryland for people between the ages of 4 and 34. According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, traffic crashes in Maryland kill more people than homicides and over 90 percent of local traffic accidents are preventable crashes caused by driver error. Common examples of driver errors including driving while fatigued, driving while under the influence, driving while texting, and failing to yield.
Many of the most devastating Maryland intersection accidents involve drivers who fail to properly yield the right of way when turning left. According to Section 21-402: “If the driver of a vehicle intends to turn to the left in an intersection or into an alley or a private road or driveway, the driver shall yield the right-of-way to any other vehicle that is approaching from the opposite direction and is in the intersection or so near to it as to be an immediate danger.”
When attempting to turn left, a motorist must yield to oncoming traffic. Drivers who cause an injury accident by failing to yield may face citations from the authorities and litigation from the injured victim. If the victim chooses to file a personal injury claim, the at-fault driver could be held accountable for losses such as medical bills, lost wages, lost future wages, pain and suffering, the cost of rehabilitation services, and other related damages. An experienced Maryland personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families in such cases regarding their legal rights and options.
