Thanksgiving Truck Accident Serves As Cautionary Reminder of Holiday Traffic

By Alpert Schreyer on December 15, 2016

Truck accidentThe day before Thanksgiving saw another cautionary reminder of holiday traffic dangers on the outer loop of the Beltway near the Georgetown Pike Interchange. According to the Washington Post, a box truck that was heading south collided with another truck and caused the first truck to flip over. The truck then landed on two cars.

The accident happened near the American Legion bridge shortly before 8:00am the morning of November 23rd.

Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt in the crash, but it came at a wildly inopportune time, as all lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours and thousands of drivers headed to their Thanksgiving destinations were delayed. Traffic was stopped for as many as seven miles, according to the Post.

What happened

Police said the driver of the Freightliner box truck, the vehicle that caused the accident, was not able to stop when the traffic ahead of him came to a sharp halt. When the Freightliner struck another box truck, it overturned and landed on a 2015 BMW 428i and a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser, which subsequently rear-ended a Chevrolet Cruz. The road was closed for over three hours and a total of 5 vehicles were involved in the accident.

The driver of the truck that set off this chain of events was charged with negligent driving and other related charges, police said.

Hazardous holiday road conditions

This accident, which could have had a tragic result, serves as a reminder that when roads are crowded they become more dangerous. More cars mean more traffic and the potential for accidents caused by speeding, road rage, exhaustion, and just plain irresponsible behavior. With the holiday season in full swing, there will be more cars on the roads, and it is important to be cautious at all times. Some accidents can’t be prevented, but some can. Negligent drivers make the roads an even more dangerous place. If you are a victim in an accident caused by the negligence of someone else, there’s help.
