We Are The Road Crew (Watch Out For Us)

By Alpert Schreyer on January 12, 2016

road work areaWhether you’re commuting to and from work or doing your weekly grocery shopping trip or travelling on vacation, chances are you will encounter crews working on the median, the shoulder or the road itself somewhere along the way. Very often this work will cause bottlenecks that will slow down traffic and, especially in the case of morning or afternoon rush hour, increase the possibility of an accident. As obvious of a statement as it is, it bears repeating that you should always be watching for road crew members wherever you see the signs, as the immediate surroundings can sometimes make them hard to see or allow them to appear seemingly out of nowhere.

Just this past Thursday, a Maryland Transportation Authority employee was working along I-95 near Havre de Grace when he was struck and killed. 59-year-old Michael Pearce of Abingdon was working with a mowing crew along the highway around 1pm when he was struck by a 2003 Ford E-150 van. Pearce was a faculties maintenance technician with the Maryland Transit Authority and was pronounced dead on the scene by Harford County emergency medical personnel.

54-year-old Corey Ness of Spring Grove, PA was the driver of the van and both the MdTA and troopers from the JFK Highway Barrack are investigating to find out why the van went off the road onto the right shoulder, hitting a dump truck and then hitting the victim.

Other members of the mowing crew were at the scene and none were injured.
