A 54-year-old Port Deposit man was killed in a car accident while working near Pikesville. According to a news report in The Baltimore Sun, the fatal crash occurred on the inner loop of Interstate 695 near Liberty Road in Baltimore County. Officials say he was completing landscaping for a State Highway Administration project when a 2001 Ford pickup truck veered off the road and struck him. The 54-year-old driver of the truck declined medical treatment. It is unclear if he will be cited for the fatal collision.
All construction and landscaping jobs are potentially dangerous, but highway work is particularly treacherous. In addition to the many hazards that are present on any construction site, highway workers have to deal with motorists who may be speeding, intoxicated, distracted, or fatigued.
According to a report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 609 people were killed in highway work zones each year between 2007 and 2012. This is a slight decrease from the annual average of 1,060 highway zone workers who were killed between 2000 and 2006.
It is absolutely vital that drivers obey work zone signs, reduce speeds, and remain attentive while traversing work zones. If you are approaching a work zone, begin slowing down right away and eliminate all other distractions. There is typically less space to maneuver in work zones, and straying from your lane because you are distracted can have devastating consequences for the workers.
Victims of highway work zone accidents have the right to pursue financial compensation for their medical bills and lost wages through workers’ compensation benefits. They can seek additional support from the driver responsible for their suffering. When a worker is killed in an accident, his or her loved ones may seek support for their tragic loss. Whether it is through workers’ compensation death benefits, civil litigation, or both, financial support may be available for lost future wages as well as medical and funeral expenses. An experienced Maryland personal injury lawyer will be able to help victims and their families better understand their legal rights and options.
