Common Injuries to Watch for at a Memorial Day Celebration

By Dianne Freed on May 1, 2018

With summer quickly approaching, there’s nothing better than gathering outdoors with friends and family to enjoy a barbeque or a picnic in the park. Memorial Day is often considered to be the kick-off of summer. School is almost out, the weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer, it’s the perfect time to celebrate the upcoming season. As Memorial Day approaches, you’ll see red, white, and blue signs in the grocery stores advertising everything from firewood to new summer beers. This holiday is synonymous with both remembering the brave men and women who served in the military and spending with people we are close with. Although this is a time of remembrance and celebration, accidents are relatively common over Memorial Day weekend.

Frequent Injuries at Memorial Day BBQs

With the BBQs, fireworks, and increased number of drunk drivers on the road, accidents are all too common over this holiday weekend. Some of the more prevalent injuries you’ll encounter over Memorial Day weekend include:

Serious Burns – If you think about the number of objects that produce fire or heat at a Memorial Day BBQ, it’s not surprising to learn that burns are a major source of injury. Between the backyard fireworks and sparklers, people standing around a bonfire, or Uncle Joe flipping burgers on the grill, burns are a real possibility.

Falls – You’re standing on a friend’s deck ten feet about their backyard, admiring their garden and the people mingling below. You lean against the deck railing and all of the sudden it gives way, and you fall ten feet to the ground. Your friend forgot to mention that he’s been meaning to replace the rotting wood for a few years now. Falls are a serious risk and can result in TBIs, broken bones, back injuries, or worse.

Dog BitesMany people will end up bringing their dogs to a Memorial Day celebration. When dogs are in a new place, especially when there is a lot of noise and activity, they can become scared and lash out. Dog bites are a dangerous injury and should be treated immediately.

Car AccidentsUnfortunately, some people opt to drive home after indulging in a day of drinking at a Memorial Day BBQ. When an inebriated driver gets behind the wheel of a car, they cause immediate risk to themselves and everyone else on the road.
