One person is in the hospital and another is in police custody after a Maryland boating accident caused serious injuries in Westport recently, according to an article in the Hartford Courant.
The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, when many people were out on the water celebrating the Independence Day holiday. Investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened, but early reports say that the injured person was hurt when he was struck by the propeller of a boat driven by a 21-year-old Rockville resident. He was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.
Negligent or reckless behavior while boating is especially dangerous, even more so than while driving on land. Boats do not have brakes, and so even if a boat operator comes to attention after a moment of distraction, they would not be able to avoid a dangerous situation right in front of them, or decrease the force of impact. In addition, the fact that boats operate on water increases the risk of fatal accidents. If an injured person is ejected overboard, they could easily drown before being rescued. Furthermore, propellers and other boat machinery pose significant threats to any person in the water.
