Potentially Hazardous Infant Bathtubs Recalled

By Alpert Schreyer on October 13, 2016

TubIn an ideal world, all products would be safe…especially products for babies.
But that’s not always the case.
On Thursday, Oct. 6, the brand Summer Infant issued a voluntary recall of 86,000 fabric slings that attach to their “Lil’ Luxuries” whirlpool, bubbling spa and shower bathtubs.
Faulty slings
According to CNN, the slings are missing a plastic clip that should serve to connect the headrest area of the tubs to the bathtub’s frame, which causes the cloth to slip down the side of the tub.
The fact that the cloth doesn’t attach to the tub properly poses a risk of the infant being injured or drowning, according to Summer Infant.
Injuries so far
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that so far there have been 91 reports of slings detaching, and that 11 of those involved a baby bumping his or her head. The CPSC advises consumers to immediately cease using the product and contact the company for a replacement.
The recall is actually coming years after the tubs were originally put on shelves. The models with the dangerous flaw were sold between October 2012 and October 2013 (model numbers are 18840, 18850, 18863 and 18873). According to the CPSC, Summer Infant has expressed concern that customers know the tubs may have been sold secondhand.
The miniature tubs, battery-operated and complete with underwater jets, are valued at $60 and were available at chains like Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us and online at Buy Buy Baby, Amazon, Walmart, JCPenney, Target, Burlington Coat Factory, Kohl’s and Diapers.com, according to CNN.
People affected can send back their faulty slings and get a replacement, complete with the necessary plastic clip.
Hearing about product recalls can sometimes be jarring: consumers put faith in manufacturers to make products that are safe for us and our families, and when things go wrong it serves as a reminder that those in charge of designing and testing products are humans who can make mistakes.   If you or someone you love has been injured because they were using a faulty product, the experienced personal injury attorneys at Alpert Schreyer, LLC are here to help. We will listen to you, build a strong case, and fight to get you the compensation you deserve.
