The Most common workplace injuries

By Alpert Schreyer on May 26, 2016

Workplace injuriesAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 workers in the United States experienced nearly 3 million nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses, the vast majority being injuries.
The top five types of workplace injuries result mostly from physical labor, as you might assume, but this isn’t true in every case.
Musculoskeletal injuries
Managers who push their workers too far may see higher turnover because of this type of injury. Strains, sprains and tears can cause pain in various parts of the body and can cause workers to need time away from their jobs. Thirty-seven percent of workers surveyed had to deal with musculoskeletal injuries.
>Musculoskeletal injuries can happen with overexertion while a worker is doing strenuous tasks like lifting, throwing, pulling, pushing and carrying. Repetitive strain causes carpal tunnel, a painful condition in the wrists.
Slips and falls
Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed experienced a slip and fall. This type of injury can result from unsafe working conditions like dirty or wet floors.
Reporting a slip and fall is important and if you hurt yourself in this way you should inform your supervisor as soon as possible, in case the injury eventually necessitates worker’s compensation.
Being struck by an object
Seventeen percent of workers surveyed have had to cope with an injury resulting from being hit by an object. This type of incident can happen when an employer doesn’t have clear or thorough safety procedures in place or doesn’t train workers well in safe practices. It can also happen when objects and machinery are not safely secured.
Again, if this happens to you, report the incident as soon as you can.
Car accidents
Many people get hurt when something happens to them while they’re driving as part of their job. Whether you are driving your vehicle or a work vehicle, report any accident that happens.
Workplace violence
Unfortunately, workers are sometimes assaulted on the job. Again, if this happens to you, tell your supervisor right away and get medical attention.
Many workplace injuries and illnesses are preventable. If you or a loved one has been injured on the job, the experienced personal injury attorneys at Alpert Schreyer, LLC can help.
