As reported by TheBayNet.com, a fatal accident recently occurred in Calvert County. At approximately 1:29 p.m. on March 2, Calvert County Sheriff’s office personnel responded to the scene of a serious injury accident. Those responding to the scene included members of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau as well as members of the Calvert County Crash Reconstruction Team.
The crash involved two vehicles, a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup truck and a 2005 Honda Pilot. Upon arrival, first responders discovered one entrapped driver in the Honda. As a result of the crash, both vehicles had sustained major damage. The 74-year-old male who was driving the GMC pickup truck was headed north on Route 261 when, for reasons unknown at the time of the report, his vehicle crossed the double yellow line and collided with the Honda.
Both vehicles came to rest on the south side of Route 261 near Bristol Drive. The collision was what is known as an offset head-on collision — one of the worst possible types of collisions. This is where only one half of the front of the vehicle is impacted, often preventing the car from crumpling safely during the crash. The driver of the Honda Pilot had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken by Maryland State Police to Prince George’s County Trauma Center with serious injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation of the crash is being conducted by Corporal Phelps of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team.
